From Publishers Weekly:
Brown, a teacher at the Harvard School of Public Health, became head of a task force on hunger in 1982. He and his colleagues conducted a three-year inquiry into the existence of malnutrition in our affluent society. The result of their work is this first-person account by Brown, with additions by medical writer Pizer from other doctors' field notes. In the tradition of such landmark sociological tracts as those by Moynihan and Harrington, this report unearths disturbing facts and statistics, calling for nonpartisan action to lessen the gap between rich and poor, which is greater in the United States than in any other industrial country. Anecdotes abound of starving people's exposure to brutal treatment, the irony of going hungry amidst plenty, the undernutrition of the elderly, bureaucratic impediments to relief and the callousness of leaders (who have made such comments as, "People are in soup lines because the food is free"). This devastating material is a powerful plea for the eradication of the man-made disease of national hunger.

From Library Journal:
Brown and Pizer traveled with other professionals throughout the United States to study firsthand the extent of hunger, a "man-made epidemic (3 million+ cases) created and spread by government policies." Following publication of their initial findings, American Hunger Crisis, in 1984, Brown organized the Physicians' Task Force on Hunger and went out again, this time to identify glaring weaknesses in the Food Stamp program. Angrily criticizing the Reagan Administration for presiding over record-breaking cutbacks in public assistance programs, the authors urge civic awareness of the danger in continuing to ignore government responsibility in alleviating this shamefully widespread human suffering. A readable book, for academics as well as the general public. Suzanne W. Wood, SUNY Agricultural & Technical Coll. Lib., Alfred

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition (Number Line to 1). Signed and inscribed ('For Marty and Harriet with affection, Larry Brown, March 1999') on the first front end paper. This is a rather rare signature. I saw only one other. You can see the covers of the book in the photographs provided. It is perfectly clean, spotless. It has one imperfection, a bump/crease off the top edge of the front cover (see photo). The covers are otherwise in excellent condition. The interior of the book looks pretty much perfect. I didn't see any soiling. I didn't see any wear. There aren't any markings or attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The book is also very solidly bound, without issue. There are eight pages of black-and-white photographs. The dust jacket is pretty close to perfect. It is spotless. It is NOT price-clipped. There are no tears. There is a slight amount of crinkling at the spine ends. I will fit the jacket with a protective cover after the photographs have been scanned. 'Living Hungry in America is the compelling saga of the dozens of prominent physicians who traveled across America to uncover the tragedy of hunger in the world's richest nation. Led by J. Larry Brown of the Harvard School of Public Health, they entered the lives and homes of hundreds of hungry families.' Dr. Brown directs the national Center on Hunger and Poverty, located within the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University, where he holds the title of Distinguished Scientist. Formerly on the faculty of the Harvard School of Public Health, Brown chaired the Physician Task Force on Hunger in America, leading a team of prominent medical leaders on field investigations into half the states in the nation during the 1980s. Their work drew sustained national media attention, and led Congress to take steps to address the growing problem of hunger. Brown is the immediate past chairman of the board of Oxfam America, and served as Assistant Director of Peace Corps/VISTA under President Carter. He also chaired the Medical Task Force of USA for Africa/Hands Across America. Dr. Brown is the author of numerous articles in both lay and scientific journals, including Scientific American and The Encyclopaedia Britannica Medical and Health Annual. He is the author of several books including Living Hungry in America. Inscribed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 001418
